If you’ve spent most of your life learning that control is the key to health; control your food, control your workouts, control your body… then you’re not alone. Most of us have been taught that discipline is everything.
That success means “sticking to the plan.”
Eat this.
Don’t eat that.
Strength train four times a week.
Do cardio three times a week.
Stretch, but not like that, like this.
And so we end up with this massive, tangled mess of rules and expectations and no actual connection to our bodies. It’s no wonder so many of us hit a wall. We’re trying to live inside someone else’s idea of what health looks like, and it’s exhausting.
control isn’t the same as care

What gets lost in all of this is trust. The trust that your body knows what it needs. The trust that rest is just as valuable as movement. The trust that your needs will change and shift, and that’s not a failure… it’s just being human!
Rigid plans don’t account for the full complexity of life. They don’t leave room for grief, travel, illness, parenting, burnout, or joy. And when your mindset is locked into “I have to do things a certain way or I’ve failed,” you miss the bigger picture: that flexibility and consistency can exist together.

Yes, you can absolutely build up to training three or four times a week. Yes, you can get stronger, more mobile, more capable. There will also be weeks (or months) where you’re too tired, too overwhelmed, too sick, too human to stick to the plan. And that doesn’t mean you’re “off track.” It means you’re living. That’s part of the process.
Rebuilding trust with your body means letting go of the lie that you have to earn your worth through perfect habits. It means learning to listen to your body and respond with compassion, not criticism. It means allowing your movement practice to be fluid, responsive, and adaptable.
Ask yourself this: what does my body need today? Not what the internet says it should need. Not what a trainer told me five years ago. Not what my friend is doing. But me, right now, in this moment.
It might be movement. It might be rest. It might be something in between. But that small act of listening is how you rebuild the bridge between you and your body. That’s how you shift from control to trust.
